Minister-designate of Gender, Children and Social Protection did not do national service

Minister-designate of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ms Otiko Afisa Djaba, has disclosed that she did not do her national service. Otiko Djaba told the appointments committee of parliament during her vetting on Monday that she was not in Ghana to do her national service. "I did not do national service because I was not in Ghana," she said.

In another twist, the minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba has further explained that she failed to do her national service because she was over 40-years-old when she completed tertiary education. This explanation contradicts her earlier statements when she appeared before the appointment’s committee.

Ghanaian students who graduate from accredited tertiary institutions are required by law to do a one-year national service to the country.
