Indexing government scandals one at a time
Ghana Palaver has reported that a lucrative feeding contract has been packaged by the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Michael Okyere Baafi, for a company owned by Mary Awuku, the wife of NPP Youth Leader, Sammi Awuku.
Mrs. Awuku’s contract entails the provision of food every working day for 140 permanent employees of the state investment promoter and 40 National Service Persons. At a cost of GHS 13 per head, the contract runs into about GHS 610,000 per anum.
Her husband, Sammi Awuku, is known to be a very close associate of the Executive Secretary and is believed to have been instrumental in his appointment to the position. Many workers of the Free Zones Authority view the contract as a form of reward for Awuku’s role in Baafi’s appointment. Our sources also say that the feeding programme was hurriedly instituted weeks after assuming office as Executive Secretary.The scheme was initially couched as a welfare package but many insiders believe it was a ruse to say thank you to his blossom friend Sammi Awuku.
